Thursday, July 26, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 0900; Present: Jasmine M., Doris B., Paul M., Joe M., Tim D., Don B. Hope P., Tara R.

The accidents that occurred since our June meeting were reviewed:

  • FL-Employee was bitten on the hand by a spider; declined to file a W/C claim
  • PA-Employee bumped his head in a vehicle accident that occurred on the site property before reporting for duty. He declined to file a W/C claim.

Vehicle Accidents:

  1. Shuttle driver struck the guardrail damaging the shuttle, no injuries
  2. Vehicle parked by SSI valet parkers was damaged
  3. Company vehicle swerved and struck a road sign; sign fell and smashed windshield; no injury

Previous Business:

  1. The motion to accept the minutes from the June meeting was passed unanimously; a 1st was given by Hope P and a 2nd by Don B.
  2. Jefferson Hospital is holding three training sessions on controlling difficult patients. All SSI employees at the site will attend one of the sessions.
  3. Jefferson Hospital safety hazards noted by Don B. in previous meeting have been rectified.

New Business:

The Dispatcher center has several safety hazards repaired during the past weeks. A burnt-out parking lot light was replaced. There was someone reported lurking by the vehicles at night and the police were called. The intruder fled the area when a road supervisor opened the door of the building. A drain cover near the SSI doorway had a section broken out large enough to allow for the heel of a shoe to go into the drain; the cover has been replaced. A rough section of concrete of the entry door was smoothed to prevent tripping.

The Safety newsletter will be going out in early September; suggestions for content were requested.

Tara R. presented the Safety Hazard at this month’s meeting. She revisited a previous hazard that is still a problem.. The traffic flow in the driveway between “4600” and “4580” is causing a hazard for pedestrians. An email was sent to all building occupants advising everyone to drive and cross cautiously in the driveway. At that time, it was decided not to install a stop sign. We discussed possible alternatives as sending the email did not solve the problem. Suggestions were: make the driveway one way heading down to the back of the buildings, install a stop sign, and install a speed bump. Also discussed, was how that hill gets slippery when wet and the possibility of installing a hand rail down the side. These suggestions will be discussed with the managers. Jasmine M. also mentioned about the piece of metal protruding from the ground in the pathway in front of the Accounting Bldg. The metal seems to be the base of a road sign that was knocked down. Spoke with Lee M.at Building Services, and he would try to do something with it. He thought maybe paint it a bright color so it can be seen or putting something over it. This sign was originally cemented into the group and would be very difficult to remove. Lee will work on it to determine the best solution.

Paul Miller will present the Safety hazard at the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 0925; the next meeting will be held on Friday, August 24, 2007.

The meeting topic was discussed: What Do New Hires and Vacations Have in Common? We discussed the importance of training new employees and doing the same for employees working unfamiliar sites due to employees taking vacation and keeping safety procedures and information updated for the sake of all employees.
