The minutes from the October, 2007 meeting were accepted unanimously. Paul M. provided the motion to accept; Don B. seconded that motion.
The Safety Committee has received certification from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania again this year. Having the certification allows SSI to receive a discount on our considerable W/C insurance premium.
A letter was sent to the client, Tri-Gate, explaining the safety hazard given at the August meeting as to the slippery stairs at a site. There has been no response from the client to date.
The question was asked at the last meeting about how often TB tests, at Jefferson Hospital, should be done. Occupational Health at Jefferson was contacted and stated that these tests should be repeated yearly. They have the Security department set-up on the schedule to be re-tested the first part of “2008”.
At a previous meeting, Workplace Violence was the topic and it was decided that an information sheet would be provided to the offices for distribution. The sheet was ready to be distributed but it was decided changes will be made after two of the guards were injured in an altercation.
New Business:
A draft of the Winter Safety newsletter was reviewed; the newsletter will be sent out the beginning of December.
What other Employers are Doing: Information on Canadian workplace safety ads was reviewed by the committee. Canada televises ads for workplace safety that use shock value to relay the safety message. The ads show in graphic detail what happens during an accident. The figures show that this tactic is working; 101 fatalities in a 12 million workforce (roughly the size of PA) vs. 240 fatalities in PA. Some American companies have requested permission to use the ads in their Safety campaigns.
The Safety Hazard for this month was presented by Joe M. He distributed information on the necessity of planning for a pandemic at work and at home. There are many sites where this information can be obtained. The committee’s information was from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) site.
The next hazard will be presented by Vickie Miller
