DO YOU KNOW THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF ACCIDENT AT SSI????
If we don’t know what the most frequent accident is, how are we going to prevent them?
Slips, trips and falls are the biggest cause of accidents for the company; 61% of the 54 claims were caused by slips, trips, or falls. If we can reduce this type of accident, we will be able to put a significant dent in our costs.
Goal: Recognizing hazards and preventing slips, trips, and falls
WHAT IS A HAZARD?
Anything that interrupts the traction of your foot with the surface you are walking on is a potential hazard, spills, snow, waxed floor, clutter, unsafe footwear, etc. Reduced vision is another cause of an accident.
BEHAVIORS THAT CAN LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT:
- Wearing the wrong footwear
- Walking too fast or running
- Distractions, not watching where you are going
- Failure to use handrails
- Not turning the lights on.
- Wearing sunglasses in low-light areas
WHAT CAN I DO AS AN EMPLOYEE ?
Lead by example and follow the safety rules
- Employees can be watching for safety hazards and notifying supervisors and their co-workers of the hazards. How many times, upon hearing that someone had a fall due to a loose carpet, do you hear “I almost fell at the same spot last week” Notifying someone of that hazard possibly could have saved an injury, don’t wait for someone else to do it. Pay attention to the near-misses.
- Supervisors take the safety hazards reported to you seriously and report them to management. Act as a conduit between the employees and management to relay safety information, both ways. Employees should know that their concerns are being heard by the right people.
- Road supervisors often visit a wide range of sites; use a site check as an opportunity to observe the area our employees are working in for safety hazards. A road supervisor would be looking at a site with a fresh eye and might notice something missed by an employee who works the site daily.
